Last but not
least this marks the closing boundary of the study area which as previously
mention, located directly opposite the Hasely Crawford stadium. This concrete
structure covers a vast amount of land space parallel to the Gulf of Paria.
This is a highly commercial complex outside of the
CBD and dominantly provides services to upper middle class and upper class
income earners from Woodbroook and West Morings etc. There is a very low
probability that one would find low class income persons who reside in east
Port- of- Spain, utilizing these services. This is because quite simply they
cannot afford to treat themselves in areas as such.
For instance this particular commercial cite provide
all amenities for their customers that would not have been available to the
people in the east. Examining the picture closely one would notice there are
car parks everywhere, even one “underground” as shown in the sign board on the
right.
On the bottom left hand corner there is a yellow
building next to the movie theatre, known as Country yard hotel. This in itself
would imply the class, race, colour and wealth of these customers or persons
who are acquainted with this hotel and these are the people who can easily part
take of these services that are offered at movie town mall.
According to an article, the nature and extent of
Contemporary gentrification is quite bold in that it is not only focusing on the
interrelation with globalization but also shows elements of urban
colonialization. It can be assumed that this is occurring because this process
of what we call urban renewal or gentrification was “copied” (Bridge 2004) from
the global north, more so cultural ties with our mother country as a result
preference is given to according to “white coloured” persons who are seen as
superior and those who are seen suited to live the urban life. And it is by
this motion which accelerates the social division among gentrifiers and the
poor vulnerable displaced dwellers.
